Policy, Public Affairs and Communications Officer

PURPOSE OF ROLE

To help deliver IAM RoadSmart’s strategy of improving safety on our roads through raising our external profile to MPs, ministers, media and the wider stakeholder community.

RESPONSBILITY AREAS

• Monitor political announcements and cascade this to the wider business for it to understand the impact on the charity, its members and on road users.

• Data analysis on issues of importance to IAM RoadSmart and managing long-term data sets on road casualty statistics and other policy areas to establish developing trends.

• Work with the press team to develop stories to promote the charity externally.

• Attend external meetings with Government officials to support IAM RS’s core strategy of increasing our external presence and share of voice to enable us to reduce road casualties.

• Communicate IAM RS’s positions to MPs in Westminster and throughout the devolved areas including briefing politicians on debates.

• Develop hard-hitting and effective policy campaigns and utilising external communications working closely with members of the marketing team to do this

• Work with external agencies on research areas to understand member and driver views on roads policy.

• Be an ‘expert spokesperson’ and represent IAM RoadSmart to the media or draft statements for media (training can be provided)

PERFORMANCE REVIEW

• Provide weekly and monthly reports as required.

• Attend team meetings, IAM RoadSmart meetings

• Attend periodic Openblend meetings with line manager, including bi-annual evaluation

• Key Performance Indicator management and adherence.

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

• Experience of working in policy and public affairs and be able to demonstrate where experience has led to policy change through campaigning.

• An understanding of the workings of Government and Parliament.

• Experience of working with stakeholders and building external relationships

• Experience of working with media would be advantageous but not essential as training can be provided.

• Knowledge on roads policy is advantageous but not essential but a keen interest in road safety, road policy and transport is necessary. An understanding of IAM RoadSmart’s core purpose should also be demonstrated.

• Analytical skills to clearly communicate business performance against objectives.

• Experience at working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is essential.

• Competent at presenting a good image of IAM RoadSmart in a public environment and to other (external) organisations. • Excellent writing skills, and a good working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

• Experience of dealing with a wide range of individuals, including highly influential policy influencing.

• A pro-active approach, self-motivated and enthusiastic with very high levels of initiative, innovative and imaginative

• A ‘can-do’ and flexible approach with the ability adapt to changing priorities, including a willingness to travel and work irregular hours if necessary

• Flexible and adaptable to short-notice changes, and able to immediately adapt and resolve problems “on the move”, given 24-hour news.

DVSA-Approved Driving Instructors – Fleet Courses

Are you an experienced ADI with a passion for road safety? We’re looking for new instructors to join our team, delivering our industry-leading courses for business drivers throughout the UK. You don’t need to be on the DVSA fleet register; we will provide you with the materials and training for delivering our courses to the same high standards as fleet-registered ADIs. Due to local demand, we are especially interested in instructors able to operate in the following areas:

  • North West
  • North-East
  • North Wales
  • East Yorkshire/Humber
  • Central England
  • Cumbria
  • Mid-Scotland

Drink-Drive Rehabilitation Course Trainers (Self-employed)

We are seeking enthusiastic, self-motivated and professional trainers to join our drink-drive team, delivering our DVSA-Approved courses to convicted drink-drivers. We require trainers to deliver classroom courses in the following counties:

 

  • England: Essex, Gloucestershire, Leicestershire, Norfolk, Nottinghamshire, Suffolk, West Yorkshire and Worcestershire
  • Wales: Monmouth and Glamorgan

 

What do we need from you?

Essential

  • A teaching qualification e.g. PTLLS/CTLLS/DTLLS, NVQ level 3 in Training & Development, or similar
  • Experience delivering behaviour change courses
  • A non-judgemental approach to clients
  • A passion and desire to support clients on their journey to returning to the road as safer driver
  • Basic IT skills. Own computer equipment i.e. laptop/computer, printer and reliable internet connection and speed
  • Ability to deliver quality training to meet the needs of the individual, whilst ensuring that course aims and objectives are met

Desirable

  • Experience working with people with alcohol/drug or substance misuse

Suitable applicants are able to work towards a formal qualification in alcohol, drug and substance misuse, such as

  • City & Guilds Award and Certificate in Working with Substance Misuse at levels 3 &4.
  • OU/FDAP Level Three Diploma in Health and Social Care (Alcohol and Substance Misuse)
